(1302-1303 Catechism of the Catholic Church)
Candidates are asked to…
Experience a journey that includes many facets of our faith which will help you to grow and be ready to celebrate the Rite of Confirmation.
How do I know if I’m ready?
None of us are ever ready, worthy or deserving of a sacrament. But,
… Confirmed by the gift of the Spirit, that they [the Candidates] give witness to Christ by lives built on faith and love…” - General Intercession from the Rite of Confirmation
Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace: It roots us more deeply in the divine affiliation, which makes us, cry, “Abba! Father!”
- It unites us more firmly to Christ and increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us
- It renders our bond with the Church more perfect (whole)
- It gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the Faith by works and actions as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross

How do I know if I’m ready?
None of us are ever ready, worthy or deserving of a sacrament. But,
- You need to be ready and open to how God will strengthen you and continue to be present in your life
- You can make an effort to be prepared to celebrate Confirmation in a way that shows sincerity
- You can participate all the way, making your responses come alive and keeping your eyes and ears ready to see what God is doing in your life
- The community - parish, parents, sponsors, and the team - is here to help you feel prepared.

Elements of Preparation
Liturgy, Ritual & Sacraments: The Confirmation program is rooted in our liturgy and ritual.
“As Catholics, the Eucharist, and by extension the Mass, is both the source and the summit of our faith life. It is where we gather as a community to worship the Lord and to provide one another with support for all aspects of our lives.”
Youth Ministry and the "Journey" towards Confirmation need to be grounded in the most important and vital part of our Catholic faith, the Eucharist…the Mass. First and foremost, Candidates, Parents and Sponsors must be attending Mass weekly during this journey.
Confirmation Program Catechesis: Catechesis is the community, parents and sponsors most important responsibility. Through study, discussion, modeling and mentoring candidates will learn the essentials of Catholic Christian faith and be exposed to the understanding of God. Candidates attend catechesis sessions.

Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed."
CCC 1285 |
From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!"; - it unites us more firmly to Christ; - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us; - it renders our bond with the Church more perfect; - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross. CCC 1303 |
Among one of the first questions in the Catechism was
“why did God make me?” The answer is, “God made me to know, love, and serve Him in this life so as to be happy with Him in the next.” When we think of the progression in this answer: KNOW – LOVE – SERVE, we can readily see how logical this is: You cannot SERVE someone you do not LOVE and you cannot LOVE someone you do not KNOW. It just makes sense. Each year we will examine each aspect with an emphasis: to KNOW. The more we know about God, the rest follows in loving Him and in serving Him. All three of these (know – love – serve) are built upon our life of prayer, our attendance at Mass, and our devotions (especially our devotion of Mary). And when we set our sights on reading and gaining knowledge of God through the Bible, God speaks to us and gives us direction in our lives. This is especially true when we do not know or are not sure about the future – all the more reason to desire to know more about this loving God Who sent to us His only begotten Son, through whom we gain even greater knowledge and understanding of Him. God wants us to serve Him, and for sure, He desires that we love Him. But it all begins when we try to get to know Him. And while there are so many good authors and great saints whose writings help us, we should keep His Word, Sacred Scriptures, as the best place to start. May this new year be one of growing in the knowledge of Him, of falling in love with Him, and of a deepening of our desire to serve Him with our lives. |
