RECONCILIATION/CONFESSION/PENANCE
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation
"And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
- John 20:22-23
This sacrament of healing and salvation is referred to as the sacrament of conversion, confession, Penance or Reconciliation. Through the acts of contrition, resolution to sin no more, confession to an ordained priest and satisfaction of penance, the penitent is forgiven by the “grace of God who is rich in mercy.” Penance, like all sacraments, is a celebration that unites us more fully to God, the Church and our faith community.
St. Patrick offers confession on Fridays 9:30 am-10:30 am & 6:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m. - in both English and Spanish. All are done on a first come, first serve basis.
Reconciliation Preparation for Children/Youth
Our children are encouraged to be prepared for Reconciliation (Confession) over the course of the first and second grade. As in all areas of Faith, the parent remains the primary catechist and determines the child’s readiness for the Sacraments. The Parish encourages that the families of all children celebrating the Sacraments be registered members of St. Patrick and the child be enrolled in the Faith Formation Program. Children who will receive First Reconciliation as Second Graders, must have been enrolled in the Faith Formation Program for First Grade the year prior.
We are asked to make a complete distinction between Reconciliation and First Eucharist (Communion). It is important to remember that receiving one does not presume or necessitate receiving the other.

Prayers for Confession
Act of Contrition
"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You. I detest all my sins, because of Your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasions of sin.Amen"
Prayer of Sorrow
“My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Amen.”
